Every time I think I have seen the very best of Mid-Century Hungarian textile design, a piece like this crosses my path and takes my breath away. What you are looking at is arguably a museum-grade collector’s piece: an incredibly rare, entirely hand-knotted vintage tapestry by the master designer, Éva Németh. Pieces of this magnitude - and this manufacturing method - rarely come to market.

Painting, woven in wool

If you know Eva Nemeth's work, you know her beautiful geometric flatweaves. But here, the meticulous hand-knotting technique allowed her to treat the wool like pastel crayons. The result is titled "Peasant Baroque" (ca. 1980s). The design features spontaneous, dreamy, drawing-like motifs that drift across a "Quiet Luxury" palette of muted pastel blue, pale beige, taupe, and soft grey. It does not feel like a rug; for me it feels like an authentic abstract painting.
