How to Hang a Tapestry: 4 Easy and Stylish Methods
One of the most common questions I get is: “How do I hang a tapestry?” And the truth is - there’s more than one right way! The best method really depends on your tapestry’s size, weight, material, and style, as well as your wall’s structure and how much weight it can bear.
As someone who’s spent years curating and working with vintage tapestries - especially mid-century textile art - I know that a beautiful wall hanging deserves to be displayed with care. So here are 4 tried-and-true ways to hang a tapestry, each with its own unique benefits:
1. Velcro (Hook & Loop Tape): The Clean, Invisible Solution
If you're looking for the best way to hang a tapestry that’s both secure and discreet, Velcro is a fantastic option. This method is especially great for medium to large-sized tapestries.
How to do it:
- Sew the soft side of Velcro (the loops) onto the top back edge of your tapestry using small, invisible stitches.
- Attach the rough side (the hooks) to a wooden slat or rod using a staple gun, nail gun, or strong adhesive.
- Mount the slat to the wall - just like you would with a piece of art.
This technique gives a clean, floating look and preserves the textile’s shape. It’s a conservator-approved method, often used in galleries and museums!
Pro tip: Velcro is ideal for handwoven / flatweave wall tapestries and rugs too. Just make sure the wall-mounted slat is properly anchored.
2. Curtain Clips: Quick, Simple & Stylish
Need a fast and easy way to hang your tapestry? Curtain clips are a go-to solution.

How to do it:
- Mount a curtain rod to your wall.
- Clip your tapestry along the top edge and slide the rings onto the rod.
It’s that easy! This method works best for lighter to medium-weight textiles and lets the tapestry hang naturally. You can also choose clips in a finish that complements your tapestry's colors and texture—adding a stylish detail to your display.

3. Rod Pocket: Elegant and Nearly Invisible
If your tapestry already has a sewn-in rod pocket or you’re handy with a needle and thread, this is a classic and visually subtle hanging option.
How to do it:
- Sew a pocket along the back top edge of your tapestry (one long pocket or several smaller ones).
- Insert a curtain rod or wooden dowel through the pocket.
- Hang the rod on picture hooks or nails.

This method distributes weight evenly and keeps the tapestry’s shape intact. It’s especially useful for vintage and mid-century tapestries with more structure. For heavier pieces, use a sturdy rod and multiple wall anchors to prevent sagging (see picture above).
4. Hooks & Nails: Traditional but Tricky
The hooks and nails method is an old-school way to hang a tapestry, but it comes with some downsides.
How to do it:
- Sew small metal rings or fabric loops along the back of your tapestry.
- Align nails or hooks on the wall to match.
- Hang the tapestry by slipping the rings over the nails.

ca. 1' apart, as a budget-friendly solution
While this method has a rustic charm, it can distort your tapestry over time—especially if the fabric is heavy. Plus, it involves more drilling and leaves visible marks on your wall, which might not be ideal if you like to switch up your décor often.
Not recommended for delicate or valuable textiles unless done with care.
