Large Eva Nemeth tapestry

The beautiful world of Eva Nemeth tapestry artist

November 22, 2021

What makes Eva Nemeth tapestries so sought after? Why are her pieces selling for $$$$s at auctions?

Handwoven wool rugs add an extra layer of soft texture to the interior. When said rug is placed on a wall it instantly became an eye-catcher focal point of the room. Sometimes one large tapestry on its own is enough to dress the room. Eva Nemeth textile designer’s tapestries indeed carry such quality.

A few years after graduating from Hungarian Univerity of Arts and Design Eva Nemeth textile designer started her career at the Csaba Cottage Industry Cooperation in Bekescsaba, Hungary. Here she designed rugs and tapestries that were handwoven from wool and other fine animal hair, hemp and rag. Living in the town where these truly beautiful rugs and tapestries were produced gives me the honor of meeting some of the rugweavers that used to work with Eva Nemeth designer, back in the time.

The cooperation between Eva Nemeth and the Csaba Cottage Industry Cooperation was uniquely fruitful. Designer and producer worked together to continuously create high quality items for decades. This fact on its own was unprecedented in the country. Hundreds of designs were turned into rugs that stand the test of time. Almost a hundred rugweavers would turn Eva Nemeth’s designs into beautiful, one-of-a-kind rugs, from the 1960s right until the end of the manufacture in the 1980s.

During the decades Nemeth developed her unique style that rooted in scandinavian folklore yet not to be confused with it. Frequently used motives of horses, birds, peacocks, flowers and trees marks her attraction to nature. She loved placing human figures, especially girls – she called them Baba ‘babe’ – into the wonderful world she created on the rugs. Her style introduced a new, timeless quality in the world of flatwoven rugs (also known as ‘rölakan’ in scandinavian countries). Eva Nemeth’s tapestries and rugs were mostly exported to western Europe, scandinavian countries and to the US. These masterpieces are still highly sought after, valuable items that sell for $$$$ on auctions.
