1. The Desert Land
Curly and tangled – waves flowing free across this woven picture, resembling of a special satellite map of a planet far away. Only the rectangular shape adds form to this extramundane landscape. This fantastic mid century tapestry looks equally eye catching both horizontally and vertically.
2. Red Circus
I named this piece ‘Circus’ on the base of its funny – curly – circle-filled design. The caramel brown background makes this tapestry especially suitable in a wood-filled interior. The abstract-geometric picture of several creatures (animals? humans?) will sure make you think for a while. I mean, this is the purpose of abstract art, right? 🙂
3. Jungle Fever
A tapestry with wonderful, lush jungle with fruit bearing trees and bushes. Exceptionally sophisticated color combination of olive green, pastel green, light orange and brown. This design is one of my favourites of all time. Fits perfectly over a simple and elegant daybed in your mid century living room.
4. Rising Phoenix
Is it just me or does this design resemble of a giant bird with wings wide open? And talking about a giant bird plus the fiery red and orange colors of this tapestry, it must be a phoenix, rising from its ashes, being stronger, smarter and more powerful. The picture is so clean that this tapestry does not only compliment a mid century modern home but even a more contemporary interior, too.
5. Modern Family
Abstract – geometric art at its finest. Notice the 10 humans in this tapestry: there’s a female on the left (with three small ones by her legs) and a man on the right, another smaller man in the very middle and also 4 little ones on the top, on the right. The Moon is usually associated with female, and the Sun is with male qualities – these celestial bodies are placed the opposite way here. Furthermore, there are two buildings / houses pictured in the middle field, both with some sort of “cars” next to them.
Modern life of a modern family, where parents trying to guard their children in the regulated, “squared” everydays and where other organic forms can only be seen when we look outside / above our boxes.
6. Blue Garden
Mid century art usually displays organic colors like greens, browns and reds. This blue art tapestry is a stunning example of the opposite. Blue is surrealistic and dreamy. The color lends this wall hanging an almost otherwordly feel. This fantastic garden places the viewer in a place where s/he can feel tiny as a bug. The flowers grow way over the horizon, just like when looked at from a very low point of view – maybe from under the ground? Talking about that, look at all of that is going on there! While some plants have parts only visible above the ground, others root from way below! What more, there’s a whole mini-garden deep down, in the bottom right corner.
There are only several warm color spots in the otherwise evenly blue image. The flowers are trying to warm up the scene, but their yellow halo is weak, pale and restricted. Metaphoric AF, considering the political-economical environment of 1960s Hungary, where these tapestries were born.
7. Urban Landscape
Like an ancient settlement in the Middle East, with uniform-looking houses built in close distance of each other. Notice the lack of windows – only two buildings have them, but in return they have no doors… Or wait, could this be the crowded downtown of any western cities? Either way, like abstract art in general, this large tapestry makes the viewer sink in thoughts for a good while. Timeless warm color scheme of chocolate brown, red and white. This wall hanging is a true mid century gem.
8. Go green!
Stunning mid century wall hanging tapestry from 60s – in green. Perfect alternative of a large framed print! This large textile wall art is a true mid century gem: shades of green and yellow and the random abstract motives make it a stunning wall decoration. With its playful, nonfigurative pattern this piece can be wall hung horizontally or vertically.
If you are looking for a large piece to display above the sofa, or perhaps as a unique headboard – this is it!
The velvet-like, somehow shiny fabric brings an additional layer to your home decor. The soft texture adds a fantastic mid mod touch to any wall!
9. About Men and Trees
Irregular circles, enclosing individual entities on these large abstract tapestry. Like trees, with their root under the ground and foliage above. Two humans(?) standing in the middle, who also have their lower parts under the ground and their upper body above. Note the similarities between their heads and the roots of the trees in the bottom corners. Place this tapestry above the couch to add a large amount of mid century feel to the interior.
10. The Feminist
Look at them women from the 1960s! They’re and wearing traditional long skirts and dresses, their hair is tied back and they’re holding kitchen-related objects like the bowl and jugs – typical housewives, one would say. But their posture says more. These young women are upright, with arms akimbo and straddled legs, looking straight at You, dear viewer. Their open, almost threatening posture clearly forwards the message: You can’t stop us now, we aren’t who we’ve been before! A large group of women who are strong and fearless, not afraid of asking for more what they’d been given.
This tapestry is a stunning example of mid century feminist art. Rare design from Laszlo Pécsy hungarian textile designer.
10+1. Geometric vs. Abstract
Chaotic waves – regulated. Free-flowing mass inside that pushes the boundaries set by regular circles – and squares and rectangles too, in case if circles are not enough to hold them back. This mid century abstract wall tapestry depicts the tense opposites present in 1960s hungarian (and eastern european in general) reality.
Even without a historic background this wall art is one hard-to-find, stunning piece. Displayed horizontally or vertically the tapestry lends and instant mid century feeling to the interior.
